Position summary
Under the guidance of the ADL Manager, the Digitization Supervisor will oversee digitization of analog resources in support of the Adventist Digital Library and Center for Adventist Research; train, supervise, schedule and manage student workers; and support the daily operation of the ADL web platform by performing regular testing, site monitoring, and public help desk services.
Qualifications summary
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably with major or minor in history, business administration, computer science, or related field.
- Coursework or experience in Seventh-day Adventist history is preferred.
- Technical skills and comfort level with hardware and software desired.
- Strong project management and organizational skills required.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Supervise daily operations of the Adventist Digital Library (ADL) Digitization Center at the Center for Adventist Research (CAR).
- Oversee digitization projects of varying scope, such as complete journal or magazine titles, collections of photos, videos, entire donated libraries, or single-item requests. Ensure projects meet quality standards and are completed on time.
- Supervise and train staff and student workers, managing schedules and workflow.
- Maintain ADL digitization standards for scanning, metadata, and archival preservation. Implement and enforce quality control measures for digitized materials (PDFs, TIFFs, MP3s, MP4s). Perform regular quality checks.
- Oversee creation and management of metadata to ensure discoverability and long-term preservation.
- Manage and maintain the metadata database (Microsoft Access).
- Collaborate with Andrews University ITS to maintain back-ups of files generated by digitization workflows.
- Perform tasks at all stages of the ADL digitization workflow, including scanning, post-processing, metadata creation, file back-ups, and content uploads to ADL website(s).
- Ensure proper handling and preservation of materials, coordinating with CAR’s Associate Director on preservation needs.
- Participate in maintenance of digitization equipment and software, including troubleshooting, requesting equipment replacements, and coordinating repairs. Update software as needed.
- Provide project updates and reports to the ADL Manager. Conduct regular quality checks and generate reports on digitization statistics, project progress, and website traffic.
- Serve as the first contact for technical support, handling web user issues and help desk tickets. ADL Manager and other CAR staff will assist with complex questions.
- In cooperation with the ADL Manager, collaborate with Andrews University departments and other partners of the ADL consortium on digitization projects.
- Assist and guide ADL content providers in digitization best practices and file preparation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the ADL Board, ADL Manager, and CAR administration.
Supervisory responsibilities
Supervise a team of part-time student workers and coordinate work assignments. Responsibilities include participation in the interviewing and hiring process for student workers; significant involvement in employee training and assessing student job performance; planning, assigning, scheduling, and directing student work.
Qualifications
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with an emphasis on time-management, accuracy, and self-motivation. Must be able to meet deadlines and manage multiple ongoing projects.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience training and supervising others is preferred.
- Strong computer implementation, troubleshooting, and related general problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with MARC, MODS, Dublin Core, and library systems such as Sierra and Folio a plus, but not required.
- Preferred experience transforming from analog to digital, including some or all of the following: works on paper, audio/video, prints and photographs.
- Demonstrable passion for the preservation of historical items, especially Seventh-day Adventist resources regardless of personal beliefs and opinions.
- Long-term vibrant relationship with the Seventh-day Adventist church structure, institutions, history, and culture is preferred.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
- Experience with Microsoft Access is preferred.
- Experience troubleshooting and providing maintenance and support for computer hardware, software, and scanning equipment desired.
- Experience desired but not required with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Adobe Premier Pro, Photoshop, Bridge, Audition, and Acrobat.
- Advanced computer skills a plus such as experience with SQL, Python, and web design and testing principles and practice.
- Nice to have some familiarity with video editing software (such as DaVinci Resolve and Handbrake), OCR software (such as Tesseract or ABBYY), and principles of file management.
Interpersonal interactions
Will have extensive and often daily written, telephone, e-mail, and in-person contact with personnel inside and outside of Andrews University, the Adventist Digital Library and the Center for Adventist Research.

Work environment
The working environment is an office with minimal noise and dirt.
