Position summary
The Crayon Box Early Childhood Education Center is looking for a kind, playful, energetic, and loving Assistant Teacher to join our Infant and Toddler classrooms (rooms 110, 112 and 102) for the 2025-2026 school year! This role is perfect for someone who loves working with little learners and can bring joy, patience, and creativity to each day. You’ll team up with our amazing Lead Teachers to create a fun, Christ-centered, play-based environment. Work hours: Monday–Friday 7:30–4:00 with a one-hour lunch break. Training and certifications provided!
Qualifications summary
Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma. Must have high energy, a positive attitude, and a genuine love for working with young children. A degree or current major in elementary education, child guidance/counseling, child psychology, family studies, or social work is preferred but not required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate patience, flexibility, and enthusiasm while supporting the developmental needs of young children in a nurturing environment.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
The Assistant Teacher must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma and demonstrate a heartfelt commitment to the care of our youngest children. This individual should bring a gentle spirit, patience, and joy to each day, serving with a servant’s heart and reflecting Christ’s love in every interaction. A deep love for babies and toddlers is essential, along with a warm, kind, and nurturing personality. Sensitivity to the needs of little ones and their families is expected, as well as the ability to bring comfort, reassurance, and positive energy to daily routines.
The Assistant Teacher must also have the physical ability and stamina to meet the needs of a busy infant/toddler classroom—lifting, carrying, rocking, and actively engaging with children as they grow and explore.
Responsibilities Include:

Assisting with the daily care of infants and toddlers, including feeding, diapering, toileting, and providing comfort with warmth and patience

Maintaining close supervision of children at all times, ensuring that eyes are always on them and they are never left unattended

Following safe sleep practices in accordance with state and center policies, always placing infants on their backs to sleep in their cribs and maintaining safe crib environments

Providing a safe, nurturing, and predictable classroom where each child feels secure and cherished

Supporting developmentally appropriate play, sensory experiences, and early learning opportunities that encourage growth and curiosity

Offering gentle guidance, positive redirection, and calm reassurance to help children begin learning about emotions and behavior

Helping maintain a clean and orderly classroom by sanitizing toys, surfaces, and supporting hygiene routines

Assisting with rest times, offering soothing care to help children relax and feel comforted

Observing and responding to the individual needs of each child, sharing observations with the Lead Teacher to support growth and development

Following and supporting The Crayon Box’s Christian philosophy, mission, and daily routines

Adhering to all health and safety regulations, including the State of Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requirements

Maintaining a professional attitude, appearance, and behavior as a representative of The Crayon Box

Communicating gently and clearly with children, families, and team members

Working closely with the Lead Teacher and collaborating with other infant/toddler teams to ensure consistency, support, and a unified approach to care

Performing additional duties as assigned by the Program Administrator
Supervisory responsibilities
- May be responsible for supervising a classroom independently in the absence of the Lead Teacher.
- Assumes the responsibilities of the Lead Teacher when directed, including managing daily routines, ensuring classroom safety, and maintaining a positive learning environment.
- Provides guidance and support to student workers as assigned by the Program Administrator or Lead Teacher.
- Ensures children are appropriately supervised at all times, both indoors and outdoors, maintaining active engagement to promote safety and well-being.
- Follows and upholds The Crayon Box’s policies, procedures, and expectations in all supervisory capacities.
Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma

Must possess a warm, friendly personality with sensitivity to the feelings and needs of both children and adults

Must demonstrate a genuine love for working with young children and bring a positive, energetic, and patient demeanor to the classroom

Willingness to fulfill responsibilities in alignment with The Crayon Box’s Christian philosophy and mission

Must have the physical stamina and high energy necessary to actively engage with children throughout the day

Previous experience caring for young children is preferred

CPR and First Aid certifications preferred but not required (training provided)

Willingness to participate in ongoing training related to early childhood education and best practices

Confident using classroom tools such as CD players, iPads, and digital cameras

Able to capture photos and videos for learning portfolios and parent communication while respecting privacy

Uses age-appropriate educational media (digital storybooks, songs, Bible stories, worship or movement videos) to support learning

Assists with electronic attendance, incident reports, nap charts, and allergy lists

Performs simple troubleshooting (e.g., recharging tablets, reconnecting Wi-Fi, restarting devices)

Sets up and uses projectors or sound systems for classroom events

Helps organize digital resources for easy classroom use

Maintains confidentiality and follows privacy guidelines when using technology

Willing to learn and adapt to new technology introduced by the center

Physical demands

The work is performed in an

Staff members are expected to maintain physical stamina, flexibility, and awareness to ensure a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment for all children in their care.
Work environment
The Assistant Teacher position is performed primarily in an
early childhood classroom and outdoor play environment. The role requires frequent physical activity and active engagement with young children throughout the day.
The work environment may include
exposure to cleaning products, bodily fluids, and common childhood illnesses. Staff are responsible for helping maintain clean, organized, and safe classroom and playground areas, which may include light housekeeping duties such as sanitizing toys, cleaning common-use areas, and supporting hygiene routines.

State of Michigan LARA licensing regulations.
