Established in 1946, the Aeolians of Oakwood University present choral music repertoire from the Baroque era to the 21st century, becoming an authoritative exponent of Negro spirituals and Work songs. Under the current director, Jason Max Ferdinand, who is in his 10th season, they have collaborated with symphony orchestras to present masterpieces from the symphonic choral literature of Brahms, Mozart, Schoenburg, Dvorak, Hailstork, Dett and others. They have performed in symphony halls throughout the world with the likes of world acclaimed soprano Kathleen Battle. In 2012 they visited Moscow, as part of the Russia-US Bilateral Presidential Commission. Later that year they competed at the 7th World Choir Games earning three gold medals and overall championship in the Spiritual category. In July 2017, they won the Choir of the World award and The Pavarotti Trophy at the Llangollen International Musical Festival in Wales, UK. They have been presented with Keys to the City of Huntsville and have December 3rd and December 5th named in their honor.
