Symphony Orchestra's Young Artist Competition

The Andrews University Department of Music is proud to present the annual Young Artist Competition concert. The Symphony Orchestra, under direction of Marc Élysée, will perform a program featuring five outstanding students, each of whom will illustrate their craft with some of the most beloved solo works by Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Dvorák and Bizet. The concert will take place on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Howard Performing Arts Center, beginning at 8 p.m.

Young Artist Competition soloists practice for months in advance, committing their selections to memory before carrying out an initial performance for the music faculty. Many talented and deserving students auditioned for the soloist position, and it was a difficult process to select only five students to perform with the Symphony Orchestra. In alphabetical order, the 2023 Young Artist Concert will feature student soloists Simon Brown (violin), Carlos Lugo (piano), Jason Marquez (clarinet), Jamison Moore (violoncello), and Davielle Smith (mezzo-soprano). This year, the winning selections include Brahms’ “Violin Concerto,” Dvorák’s “Cello Concerto,” Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 1,” Debussy’s “Rhapsody No. 1,” and selections from Bizet’s “Carmen.”
