The Andrews University men's basketball team kicked off its season with a game against the CBG Prep Tigers Thursday night, Oct. 30, in the Andreasen Center for Wellness. The gym buzzed with excitement as students, parents and community members filled the stands, eager to see the team take the court for the first time this year. The energy was electric, the air thick with school spirit, and the players were ready to make a statement.

From the opening tip-off, the Cardinals came out strong, immediately showcasing their speed, teamwork and defensive intensity. Within the first few minutes of the game, senior Preston Flowers scored the first three-pointer of the game for the Cardinals. The team maintained its rhythm, as the players grabbed rebounds, forced turnovers and sank multiple three-pointers that kept the momentum alive. Their chemistry was evident. Cheers from the stands started to fill the gym as the team kept making plays and scoring points. Throughout the first quarter of the game, the teammates worked together and stayed composed under pressure. The Tigers put up a good fight, but the Cardinals' defense held firm until the end of the half with a 46-40 lead, setting a confident tone for the rest of the game.

As the second half began, the pace only intensified. The Cardinals continued to show their heart, demonstrating their focus with every possession. Players like senior Duane Darrett brought energy to the game, contributing both defensively and offensively. The crowd's enthusiasm never wavered as each basket and defensive play was met with chants and loud applause that lifted the team’s spirits even higher.

In the final quarters, the Cardinals’ determination was on full display. The Cardinals’ bench made an impact, keeping the intensity high whenever they stepped onto the floor and encouraging their teammates from the side. As the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read 92-63, and the stands erupted in celebration. Fans cheered, players exchanged high fives and the Cardinals walked off knowing they had set the tone for the season ahead. Not just the victory, but the strong start to the season. The player of the game was junior Rafael Samuels, who shot 81% from the field, scoring 23 points, leading with 10 rebounds and leading with three steals.

The Cardinals’ season opener was a display of discipline, preparation and promise.

While unfortunately they lost their next two games, the Cardinals hope to get back on track with their next away game at East-West University on Nov. 10 and their next home game on Nov. 13 against Glen Oaks Community College.
